A discount store near Nottingham, which is said to offer prices as cheap as popular retailer Wilko, is experiencing a surge in business. Ilkeston Discount Chain Store, formerly known as Discount Party Outlet, opened its doors six months ago and has quickly outgrown its current space. As a result, the store owner plans to expand into the space next door to accommodate the growing demand.

From Liquidation Stock to Menswear and More

Ilkeston Discount Chain Store initially sold "liquidation stock" taken from high-street chains. However, owner Andy Hampton now intends to stock between 1,500 and 1,800 menswear items in addition to hardware and pet supplies. Speaking to the Nottingham Post, Hampton explained, "Six months in, we cannot add anything to this current store, it's full. But the floor space at the new shop is three times bigger."

As Cheap as Wilko

Hampton proudly claims that his store offers prices as competitive as Wilko. He believes this is one of the reasons behind the store's success, stating, "Because we're as cheap as Wilko, we can still fill our shelves and give people in Ilkeston what they want."

Austerity Sparks Rise in Discount Stores

Discount stores have become increasingly popular across the country in recent years due to tight household budgets caused by austerity. Consumers are turning to these stores to find affordable options for their shopping needs.

Support for Wilko Workers

The UK government has pledged to provide assistance to Wilko workers after the discount chain recently went into administration. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak assured the public that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) would offer support to those affected.

Success Stories: Moda Imperiale and Overstockers

Other independent discount stores in the UK have also noticed a rise in customers seeking affordable deals. Shane Phelan and Jessica Cullen, owners of Moda Imperiale in Huddersfield, offer top brands at significantly reduced prices. Richard Williams, proud owner of Overstockers, has seen customers flock to his store for budget-friendly essentials. Bestselling items at Overstockers include hotel pillows that cost £5 for a pack of two, while they can be found for £40 elsewhere.

As the demand for discount shopping continues to grow, it seems that independent discount stores are filling a gap in the market and providing affordable options for UK consumers.
