Local Man Turns Childhood Dream into Reality

A man from Surrey has fulfilled his childhood dream by purchasing a crumbling castle for a mere £1. Martin Higgins, 60, bought Betchworth Castle after the local council refused to restore it. The castle, which was once visited by King Edward, had fallen into disrepair under its previous owners.

Ambitious Offer Secures Castle Ownership

When the local council refused to preserve the castle, Martin made them an offer they couldn't refuse. He proposed buying the castle for just £1 and taking on the restoration project himself. Although he didn't receive the keys to the castle, he did gain ownership of the railings surrounding it.

Restoration Efforts Pay Off

Despite the castle being in a state of disrepair when Martin purchased it, he dedicated his own money and countless hours to restoring it. He spent £29,000 on repairs, including restoring walls and window-frames. Thanks to his efforts, the castle now attracts an impressive 28,000 visitors annually.

A Childhood Dream Turned Tourist Attraction

Betchworth Castle, once on the brink of collapse, has been transformed into a popular tourist destination. Martin's dedication and hard work have paid off, and the castle is now a testament to his love for history and preservation. Visitors can now explore the castle's rich history and enjoy the stunning surroundings.

Preserving History for Future Generations

Martin's story serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving historical landmarks for future generations. His passion and determination have breathed new life into Betchworth Castle, ensuring that it will be enjoyed by visitors for years to come.
