A retired surgeon in Shipley, West Yorkshire, has taken drastic action after his neighbor built a 'roof terrace' extension that overlooks his garden. Peter Vowden, 71, claims that the extension not only invades his privacy but also includes CCTV cameras that peer into his backyard. The extension, which was built without a planning application, may now have to be torn down after Bradford Council rejected a retrospective planning application.

Privacy Invasion and Council Violations

Peter Vowden is furious with his neighbor, Khalil Hussain, for building a 'roof terrace' extension that allows him to see right into Vowden's private garden. Vowden claims that the extension was built without any planning application and has CCTV cameras that further invade his privacy. To make matters worse, Hussain also cut down protected mature trees against council rules.

Retrospective Planning Application Rejected

Bradford Council recently turned down a retrospective planning application for the extension. However, Vowden is concerned that the council may not enforce its own decision, leaving the extension intact. Despite this setback, Hussain plans to appeal the council's decision.

Opposition and Investigations

Hussain's extension has faced opposition from other neighbors and the neighborhood watch. The council is also conducting an investigation into the alleged unauthorized removal of trees on the property.

Conflicting Views Among Councillors

Councillor Kamran Hussain defended the extension, claiming that Hussain believed it was permitted development and only applied for planning permission once he found out it wasn't. On the other hand, fellow councillor Kevin Warnes believes that if the applicant had engaged with neighbors and followed planning advice, the approval process would have gone smoothly. Warnes also believes that the extension damages the outlook of neighbors.

Khalil Hussain could not be reached for comment.
