McDonald’s is planning to trial its breakfast service “within a few weeks”

It will be welcome news for fans who were left “heartbroken” to find newly reopened restaurants weren’t offering its popular breakfast menu.

McDonald’s began reopening its restaurants for deliveries and drive-thrus on May 20 after temporarily closing all 1,350 restaurants on March 23 due to coronavirus lockdown.

Restaurants aren’t allowed to reopen until at least July 4, although they are allowed to offer takeaway services. Many brands, including McDonald’s, initially closed while they worked out how to offer takeaways safely.

But due to social distancing measures in newly reopened branches meaning fewer staff working, the chain has offered a reduced menu and shorter opening hours of 11am to 10pm.

But it looks like McMuffins, bagels, and hash browns could be making a comeback soon.

Paul Pomroy, chief executive of McDonald’s UK and Ireland, said: “We are working hard behind the scenes to open for longer and offer more services.

“I hope that within a few weeks we will be able to start trialling breakfast service.”

But he warned new menu items will only be introduced once its safe to do so.

“Please continue to bear with us. Employee safety remains my top priority and we will only move forward with new services and menu items when we’re confident we can do so whilst still enabling a safe working environment,” Mr Pomroy added.

McDonald’s couldn’t tell us when exactly the trial will take place, which restaurants will be involved or whether a full breakfast menu will be on the cards, saying it’s too early to say.

It comes as McDonald’s plans to relaunch its “McDelivery” service at 500 restaurants from next week. Until now, it’s been using Just Eat and Uber Eats to fulfil home delivery orders.

There are now 934 McDonald’s branches open across the UK and Ireland. Use McDonald’s store locator tool to find your nearest.
