San Diego, California, United States - April 13th 2011: This is a photo taken in the studio on a white background of a McDonalds Happy Meal. It has often been brought in to question if fast food chains are to blame for obesity in America.

MCDONALD’S is hiking prices on several menu items in a blow to hard-up Brits.

The fast-food chain’s Mayo Chicken burger is rising from 99p to £1.19, a 20% increase.

McDonald’s is hiking prices on several menu items

A Bacon Mayo Chicken burger will increase from £1.59 to £1.79, a 12.6% increase.

Meanwhile, its Bacon Double Cheeseburger is becoming 8% more expensive as it will rise from £2.49 to £2.69.

Its Triple Cheeseburger is increasing by 7.4% from £2.69 to £2.89 and medium-sized fizzy drinks will rise by 7.1% from £1.39 to £1.49.

All five changes will come into effect on February 15, but it’s important to note that prices can vary between branches.

The price increases are McDonald’s new recommended retail prices and franchisees are free to set their own product pricing, but typically follow the company’s lead.

To help cushion the blow, McDonald’s is also set to launch a budget range known as Saver Meals from February 15.

This will include bundles of some of its burgers with sides and a drink.

The hikes come after McDonald’s caused outrage last July by rising the price of its famous cheeseburger for the first time in over 14 years.

Like the Mayo Chicken Burger in this latest round, the signature cheeseburger was increased in price by a fifth from 99p to £1.19.

At the time McDonald’s UK and Ireland boss Alistair Macrow said that the company was facing “tough choices” about prices.

Like every other company, McDonald’s has faced a steep jump in the cost of transport, staff, ingredients, energy and packaging.

Rival chains including Nando’s, KFC and Burger King have all made similar increases as they face inflationary pressures too.

Last month, Mcdonald’s posted a 12.6 per cent in international sales, which includes the UK.

It added that more families were flocking to its restaurants because it was still cheaper than other restaurants for a meal.
