Struggling families could be missing out on thousands of pounds

Hard-pressed families in the UK are missing out on billions of pounds in support, with exclusive figures revealing that £23billion worth of means-tested benefits and social tariffs could go unclaimed this financial year. According to Policy in Practice, the average household could be £2,700 a year better off if they claim all they are due.

What benefits are being left unclaimed?

The £23billion includes various benefits such as Universal Credit, Council Tax Support, Carer’s Allowance, Pension Credit, and child benefit. If unclaimed disability benefits and other discretionary payments were included, the total could exceed £30billion.

Key areas where people are missing out:

1. Universal Credit: £5,772 a year unclaimed on average

2. Pension Credit: £2,700 a year unclaimed

3. Pension age housing benefit: £4,300 a year unclaimed

4. Carer’s Allowance: £4,259 a year unclaimed

5. Council Tax Support: £1,513 a year unclaimed

6. Social tariffs for water and broadband: £360 a year unclaimed

7. Child benefit: £1,970 a year unclaimed

Reasons for benefits going unclaimed

According to experts, benefits are not being claimed due to a lack of awareness, administrative complexity, and stigma associated with claiming benefits. Difficulty in filling out forms and engaging with the digital system are also contributing factors.

Despite efforts to promote benefits, millions of eligible people are still missing out on crucial financial support. It's important for individuals to check their eligibility and claim what they are entitled to.
