Millions of Families to Benefit from Child Benefit Changes

The HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs), the organization responsible for paying child benefit in the UK, has introduced a major update to its smartphone app that will benefit millions of families. The app now includes a dedicated child benefit section, allowing customers to view and update their bank account details easily and report any changes that may affect their payments. This update eliminates the need for customers to wait on hold to speak with an operator through the HMRC hotline.

How to Use the HMRC App for Child Benefit

To take advantage of the new child benefit features in the HMRC app, customers need to follow two simple steps. First, they can go to the child benefit section within the app and select "change bank details." This allows them to view and update their bank account information instantly without the need to contact HMRC. However, it's important to note that if bank account details are changed, any payments due within three days will still be credited to the previously listed bank account.

Secondly, customers need to set up the HMRC app for their first use. Once installed from the App Store for iOS or the Google Play Store for Android, customers can log in using a pin, fingerprint, or facial recognition. The app will guide users through the necessary steps to complete the setup process, including signing into their account or registering if they haven't used HMRC's online services before.

What is Child Benefit and Who is Eligible?

Child benefit is a government payment made to parents to help with the costs of childcare. It is usually paid every four weeks and also provides National Insurance credits that contribute to the recipient's state pension. The amount of child benefit depends on the number of children. Currently, parents can claim £24 per week for their first or only child, and an additional £15.90 per week for each additional child. To be eligible for child benefit, individuals must live in the UK and be responsible for a child under 16. However, child benefit can also be claimed for a child under 20 if they are in approved education or training.

Understanding the High Income Child Benefit Charge

Parents or caregivers who earn over £50,000 per year are subject to the high income child benefit charge. This means they must repay 1% of their child benefit for every £100 of income earned over the £50,000 threshold. Once the yearly income reaches £60,000, the full amount of child benefit received must be repaid. It is the responsibility of parents to notify HMRC if they are liable for the charge and to file a self-assessment tax return to make the payment.

If you have any questions about child benefit eligibility or the high income child benefit charge, you can contact the Child Benefit Office for assistance.
