Research from Metro Bank reveals 51 per cent of consumers can only afford under half of their regular monthly financial commitments.

Brits are struggling to meet demands of rising bills amid the cost of living crisis

It comes as customers faced up to two-hour queues to access energy suppliers’ websites as hundreds rushed to log meter readings ahead of yesterday’s price hike.

Firms can charge households up to £2,500 a year for electricity and gas — up from £1,971.

British Gas, Scottish Power and Shell Energy all reported their apps crashing and phone lines being jammed.

British Gas said they will accept readings on a special online form until October 14.
