Alone and Helpless
As a widower, Charlie felt overwhelmed by the situation. He said, "It's just incredible that I've got a bill of that size." To make matters worse, he received the bill on a Saturday and was given a deadline of the following Friday to pay. If he had been in Spain at the time, he might not have even seen the bill.
A Frustrating Wait
Charlie's daughter and son-in-law tried to assist him, but their efforts seemed futile. Even after more than a week, British Gas had not responded to their inquiries. Son-in-law Chris explained, "The lady tried to explain that there must be a glitch in the system. She said that they had suspended that bill while they looked into it. Nobody has been in touch yet."
A Mix-Up
British Gas has now acknowledged that there was a mix-up with addresses in the neighborhood where Charlie lives. The energy giant apologized for any upset caused and assured that they would contact Charlie to resolve the issue. They also stated that the bill did not pertain to his energy supply.
Not the First Time
This is not an isolated incident. Other British Gas customers have also received shocking bills. One couple was stunned to find a £117,000 bill, while another retired couple saw their bill triple despite being on holiday.
