Concerns Raised by Citizens Advice
More than two million people in the UK are set to have their gas and electricity cut off this winter due to their inability to afford to top up their prepayment meter, according to Citizens Advice. The charity has expressed worry that this will not be a one-time occurrence for many, as 1.7 million people experienced disconnections at least once a month last year. Additionally, 800,000 individuals went without gas and electricity for over 24 hours in 2020 because they couldn't afford to top up.
Scandal Leads to Forced Prepayment Meter Fittings
Ofgem, the energy regulator, recently permitted EDF, Octopus, and Scottish Power to resume the practice of forcibly fitting prepayment meters (PPMs) after a temporary ban. Citizens Advice has voiced its concerns about this decision, predicting that this winter will be its busiest period for assisting individuals who cannot afford to top up their meters.
Millions in Debt to Energy Suppliers
Citizens Advice's latest research suggests that over five million people in the UK are living in households that owe money to their energy suppliers, putting them at risk of debt collection and being forced onto a prepayment meter. The survey also found that one in four people cannot afford their essential bills, and one in ten households had to borrow money in the past six months to cover their energy costs. Additionally, half of those in debt to their energy suppliers have had to turn off their heating, while nearly three million people have had to skip meals, cut back on food spending, or sell possessions to keep their meters topped up.
Immediate Action Needed
Citizens Advice's chief executive, Dame Clare Moriarty, has called for immediate action to address this crisis. She stated that without intervention, the same situation will repeat itself every winter. The charity is urging the government to provide new energy bill support for those in need and to develop a long-term approach to the issue.
How to Get Help with Prepayment Meters
If you have a prepayment meter and are struggling to keep it topped up, there are several avenues of assistance available:
1. Speak to Your Energy Supplier
If you fall into debt, contact your energy supplier to discuss a potential repayment plan before being put on a prepayment meter. You can negotiate a better deal if the initial offer is unaffordable.
2. Apply for an Energy Grant
Various energy companies have grant schemes to support customers who are struggling to cover their bills. Eligibility criteria and the amount of assistance offered vary by supplier. Contact your energy supplier or visit their website for more information.
3. Join the Priority Services Register (PSR)
The Priority Services Register provides additional help and protections for vulnerable households, such as advance warning of blackouts, free gas safety checks, and extra support for those facing difficulties. Check if you are eligible and apply through your energy firm.
4. Seek Support from the Household Support Fund
The Household Support Fund, valued at £842 million, offers assistance to low-income households through vouchers or grants. The amount and method of payment will depend on your local council. Apply promptly, as councils have until March 31 to allocate their share of the fund.
