Residents in certain local authorities in the UK are having to pay up to five times more council tax relative to their salary compared to residents in other areas. According to the TaxPayers’ Alliance, people in West Devon spend 10.8% of their salary on council tax, while those in Wandsworth, South West London, only spend 2.7%.
Hard-Hit Areas
Devon is one of the regions that is hardest hit by high council tax rates. Analysis from the TaxPayers’ Alliance shows that the North East suffers the highest local tax burden relative to wages, at 8.66%. On the other hand, people in Scotland have to pay the least amount, with an average of 5.1% of their pay going towards town hall taxes.
National Increase Since 1992
Council tax has more than doubled in relation to average earnings since its introduction in 1992. Despite this, levies in the North of England are a steep 20% higher than in London, even though homes in the capital are three times more expensive on average.
Cost-of-Living Crisis
As the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact individuals across the UK, campaigners are urging for a 12-month council tax freeze. John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, states that taxpayers are struggling with the unsustainable burden of council tax and that the most hard-pressed households seem to be bearing the brunt of rising rates. He emphasizes the importance of freezing council tax to give residents much-needed breathing space.
