Shoppers Express Frustration as Fashion Retailer Matalan Closes Another Store

Shoppers are expressing their discontent as Matalan, a popular fashion retailer with 250 branches, prepares to shut down yet another store. The store, located in Leeds, will be closing its doors for the final time next month.

Shutting Doors in Leeds

The Matalan store in The Core Shopping Centre on The Headrow will be closing on February 24, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP). A spokesperson for the company stated that they are working closely with affected employees to find suitable positions within their local store network.

Although the physical store will be closing, customers in the area will still have access to Matalan's full range of products through their website. The company expressed gratitude to the local community for their support and patronage.

Shopper Reactions

The announcement of the closure on Facebook prompted various reactions from locals. One shopper expressed sadness at the changing landscape of Leeds, stating, "The Leeds I knew has almost gone now…the shops are dwindling fast." Others mentioned the inconvenience of having to travel further to reach the nearest Matalan store.

Another shopper expressed frustration, stating, "It's getting silly." The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that plans are in place to demolish the shopping centre and develop a new space that will include a mix of shops and student accommodation. Some shoppers expressed concern that this shift towards more student housing would negatively impact the shopping experience in the area.

Amanda wrote, "I hate going into Leeds Centre and the way it's going in the future. I won't be going there at all; I will just find somewhere else to go." Jacky also voiced their frustration, lamenting the lack of affordable housing for the working class.

Continued Closures

This closure in Leeds follows the recent shutdown of another Matalan store in Leytonstone. Shoppers reacted to the news on Facebook, expressing sadness and disappointment.

As Matalan continues to close stores, some shoppers are concerned about the impact on their local communities and the changing landscape of the high street.
