Price Cap Increase

With Ofgem's latest price cap for energy bills now in effect, households can expect an average increase of £94 on their gas and electricity bills this winter. However, there are options available for those who are struggling to keep up with the rising costs.

Free Energy Bill Credit

Several energy suppliers are offering free bill credit to customers who need assistance with their energy costs. Here are some of the companies providing this support:

British Gas – Up to £250

British Gas is offering up to £250 in free credit to customers who pay for their energy bills through a prepayment meter. Eligible customers will have the credit added to their meters automatically over the next month.

EDF – £30

EDF is increasing its warm home discount payment from £150 to £180 for eligible customers. This extra £30 will be automatically added as credit to energy accounts, reducing standing charges for the period of January to March 2024.

Utilita – £150

Utilita is paying out its Warm Home Discount in two payments of £75 to eligible customers. Pay as you go customers will receive vouchers, while those with smart prepayment meters will have the credit added directly to their meters. Direct debit customers will receive the full £150 applied to their accounts.

OVO – £15

Ovo has increased its temporary credit from £5 to £15. This means that customers can now receive an extra £10 when topping up their prepayment meters. The Customer Support Package, totaling £40 million, provides financial support through the colder months.

Scottish Power – £10

Scottish Power offers emergency credit of £10 to prepayment meter customers. This credit allows customers to keep their energy supply on until they can top up. However, once the credit runs out, the supply may be temporarily disconnected until the meter is topped up again.

Octopus – Up to £20

Octopus Energy provides £10 emergency credit on smart gas and electricity meters. Smart prepayment meter customers can activate the emergency credit on their home display, while traditional prepayment meter customers can receive £10 on their electricity meters and £20 on their gas meters.

Fuel Vouchers – £50

Customers with prepayment meters may be eligible for a one-off voucher worth £50 to top up their energy. The Fuel Bank Foundation charity offers this scheme through various organizations, such as food banks and Citizens Advice. Check with your local council or energy supplier for more information.

Warm Home Discount

The Warm Home Discount is an automatic £150 discount off energy bills. To qualify, you need to receive one or more of the listed benefits. The discount is added as credit to your electricity account, usually between October and April.

Remember to check the government website for more information on eligibility and how to apply.
