Telecoms Provider Gives Away Free Data in 240 Stores Across the UK for Christmas

Expanded Databank Reaches Over 1,000 Locations

A major telecoms provider, Virgin Media O2, is offering free data in all of its 240 stores in time for Christmas. The company's databank, which helps people struggling to access mobile data, is expanding to over 1,000 locations across the UK. With the support of the charity Good Things Foundation, all 240 O2-owned stores will become hubs starting from December 7. The scheme will also be expanded to Crisis and Change Please – Driving for Change homeless charities, bringing the total number of locations with access to the databank to more than 1,600.

25GB of Free Data Available for Six Months

In addition to expanding the databank, Virgin Media O2 is increasing the amount of free data available. Those in need will now be able to receive 25GB of data per month for six months, equivalent to approximately 275 hours of internet browsing. This free data will enable individuals to access essential services like finding shelter, locating food banks, accessing online medical help, and staying in touch with loved ones.

How to Access the Free Data

To qualify for the free data boost, individuals must be at least 18 years old and come from a low-income household. They must also meet one or more of the following criteria: have no access or insufficient access to the internet at home, have no or insufficient access to the internet when away from home, or cannot afford their current monthly contract or top-up. Eligible individuals can visit participating stores and request a data voucher from an O2 employee who has been trained to use the National Databank's platform.

Supporting Homeless Charities and Providing Second-Hand Smartphones

In addition to offering free data, Virgin Media O2 is working with Crisis and Change Please – Driving for Change homeless charities to provide free second-hand smartphones through its community calling scheme. This initiative aims to further support individuals in need, helping them stay connected and access essential services. For example, Kieran O'Brien, who was previously homeless, emphasized the importance of mobile data, stating that it would have made a significant difference in his ability to communicate with his family and potentially accelerate his journey out of homelessness.

Increasing Digital Inclusion and Connectivity

Rob Orr, Chief Operations Officer at Virgin Media O2, explained that the expansion of the national databank and the increase in free data aim to help people most affected by the cost of living crisis. By opening more national databank digital inclusion hubs and providing easier access to connectivity, the company hopes to assist individuals in getting online, accessing essential services, and staying in touch with loved ones during the holiday season and beyond.
