Three Fun and Affordable Ways to Entertain Kids in the Kitchen

Gloomy, cold weather can make it difficult to find activities for kids, especially when going outside isn't an option. Trips to soft play centers can also be expensive. Instead, why not try getting into the kitchen and whipping up some cheap and tasty treats with the little ones? Here are three fun ideas to get you started:

Carrot Cake Oats

Try this delicious recipe from Rose Maclean (@dietitianrose on Insta). Ask the kids to mash up two ripe bananas and put them in an ovenproof dish. Add 200g of rolled oats, 40g of plain flour, half a teaspoon of cinnamon, a teaspoon of baking powder, a grated carrot, and 40g of crushed walnuts. Finally, pour in two tablespoons of honey and around 500ml of milk. Get the kids to mix all the ingredients until well-combined. Cook in a pre-heated 180C oven for about 40 minutes until golden. Allow to cool and top with plain vanilla or Greek yogurt.

Perfect Pasta

Get the kids involved in making fresh pasta with this recipe from Tesco Real Food. Tip 200g of 00 grade flour into a large bowl, then create a well in the center. Add two beaten eggs and mix until you have a shaggy dough. Transfer the dough onto a clean surface and knead for ten minutes until it becomes a smooth ball. Put the ball back in the bowl and let it rest for 20 minutes. Using children's scissors, let the kids cut off small chunks of pasta and place them directly into a pan of boiling water. Cook for about seven or eight minutes.

Getting Choppy

Kids love to help with everyday dinner recipes, but chopping can be tricky. To keep children occupied and safe, try using toddler-safe kitchen kits. These kits allow children to cut up fruits, vegetables, and cheese without any worry. The Vaktop knife eight-piece set is a great option, and it's currently on sale for £12.99 on Amazon.
