Discovering a Roman Treasure
A treasure hunter, who remains anonymous, struck gold when he unearthed a hoard of ancient Roman coins in a Norfolk field in 2020. This once-in-a-lifetime find has now made him thousands of pounds richer.
Biggest Coin Hoard in Years
The metal detectorist spent two years diligently searching and ultimately uncovered a massive hoard of 432 Roman coins. The total value of the coins is estimated at an impressive £25,000.
Auction Success
The treasure hunter recently sold the first 73 coins from his find at an auction, fetching a remarkable £15,285. One coin alone sold for an impressive £3,400 due to its connection to a famous emperor.
Ancient Roman History
The silver coins, discovered in Colkirk, Norfolk, likely belonged to a wealthy Roman family who lived in Britain during the early 400s. It is believed that they buried their wealth in the field while fleeing from the invading Saxons across the North Sea.
Unearthing History
The coins lay undisturbed for approximately 1,600 years, buried about 15 inches below the surface. Only a farmer's plough could have potentially disturbed them over time.
Next Auction and Profit Sharing
The remaining coins will be sold in a second auction next year, with an estimated combined value of £10,000. The treasure hunter will have to split his profits 50-50 with the landowner.
Historical Significance
Nigel Mills, a coin and artifact specialist, explains that this hoard reflects the wealth and importance of the area. Similar Roman treasure finds, such as the Hoxne and Thetford hoards in East Anglia, highlight the region's historical significance.
