WHSmith, the high street chain, has been forced to take drastic measures to combat a shoplifting epidemic. In response to a spate of thefts across the country, the retailer has started placing security tags on low-value items and keeping them behind the tills. Even items as inexpensive as £1 have had to be protected.
Self-Serve Tills blamed
Experts believe the rise in shoplifting is linked to the increased use of self-serve tills and the decrease in customer-staff interaction. With fewer employees available to monitor transactions, criminals have become more brazen in their actions.
Tagging Everything Over £10
Due to the pervasiveness of the thefts, WHSmith has made it compulsory to tag every item with a sale price over £10. This level of security is necessary to protect the store's merchandise from determined thieves.
Battle Against Shoplifting
WHSmith employees described the situation as a "losing battle." They stated that shoplifting is out of control and that the extreme measures are necessary to combat the problem.
Retail Industry Demands Action
The British Retail Consortium reported approximately eight million thefts from March 2022 to March this year. Retail experts are urging the government and police to take more action to combat the rising number of shoplifting incidents.
Rising Violence in Supermarkets
The epidemic of shoplifting is not the only challenge faced by high street stores and supermarkets. Tesco workers, for example, have recently been offered body cameras following an increase in violent attacks. Each month, around 200 staff members of the supermarket chain experience assault from customers.
