End of an Era for Bicester Store

A major high street chain, WHSmith, has announced the closure of one of its branches in Bicester at the end of this month. The retailer, which has 1,400 stores across the UK, will shut its shop in Crown Walk on August 30. The closure comes as the site's landlord has agreed to a new letting of the unit, and staff will be redeployed to nearby stores.

Change in Strategy

WHSmith has stated that it will no longer open any more high street branches in the UK. Instead, the retail giant plans to shift its focus to UK airports and train stations, as well as expanding in the US and Europe. This announcement follows a trend in the retail industry, with other major chains such as Tesco and Marks and Spencer also closing stores and seeking new strategies.

Thanking Customers and Supporting Staff

A spokesperson for WHSmith expressed disappointment in losing their presence in Bicester, but thanked customers for their support. The company also acknowledged the commitment of its in-store colleagues and promised to support their transition and redeployment to nearby stores wherever possible.
