Husband and wife David and Susan Schwartz have made it their mission to visit over 200 Costco warehouses across 14 different countries – and they're now sharing their top tips. They spoke to HOAR to find out exactly what makes Costco warehouses in the UK special and how they differ from their counterparts in the US.
The Food Courts Have More Choice
David and Susan were shocked to discover just how much choice there is at Costco's UK food courts. On their travels across the UK's 29 Costco stores, they found that the food court menu is "way" more extensive than in the US. Some unique items they discovered include Aberdeen Angus cottage pie, jacket potatoes with various toppings, Korean beef BBQ bake, and fish and chips. About 60% of the products are domestically sourced.
You Can Get Ultra-Local Specialties
The food on offer at Costco warehouses in the UK varies across different regions. For example, the Aberdeen warehouse sells fresh haggis, the Bristol warehouse sells four different brands of cider made locally, and the Birmingham warehouse sells Banks's Original Beer brewed just 12 miles away. Some warehouses also carry unique condiments like Henderson's Relish.
One UK Warehouse is Unique
Most UK warehouses look similar to those in the US, but the Stevenage warehouse is an exception. It is located in a repurposed John Lewis distribution center and has a stunning interior with original columns and a low-slung ceiling. The product shelving in UK warehouses is yellow and black instead of the typical orange and green.
UK Costcos Are Great for Gin Lovers
Costco warehouses in the UK have a wide variety of gin options. During the festive period, they usually offer a gin advent calendar and a gift box with gin-filled glass Christmas tree ornaments. They also stock popular gins from Bombay Sapphire, Gordons, and Tanqueray.
Quirkiest Products on Offer
One of the strangest things you can buy at UK Costcos is gold bars. They also offer a range of over-the-counter health and beauty aid products, including Kirkland Signature vitamins and supplements.
How to Shop at Costco
To shop at Costco, you need to be a member. Membership starts from £15 a year for online shopping only. There are also trade memberships for businesses starting at £26.40 a year. Each membership includes a free membership card for spouses and partners who live together.
