Tory rebels threaten to shoot down Sunak's Bill

Tory rebels have broken cover and revealed their intention to vote against Rishi Sunak's emergency deportation Bill. Right-wing MPs are warning that if the amendments to toughen up the legislation are not accepted, they are prepared to vote against it. Rebel ringleader Miriam Cates argues that the current form of the Bill won't stop illegal immigration.

Conservative MPs want legally binding amendments

Nearly 60 Conservative MPs are pushing for amendments that would make Rishi Sunak's claim about the Bill legally binding. Votes on potential changes to the Bill will take place in the Commons tonight, with a final major vote on the legislation happening tomorrow.

Work and Pensions Secretary downplays Tory rebellion

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride sought to downplay the scale of the Tory rebellion, stating that it is common for amendments to be made to Bills as they progress through Parliament. He expressed confidence that the Bill will progress in a form that effectively addresses illegal immigration.

Sunak claims the Bill already satisfies rebel pleas

In an attempt to head off the rebellion, Rishi Sunak claimed that the Bill already satisfies one of the rebel pleas to ignore the European Court of Human Rights. The Prime Minister stated that he is prepared to overrule Rule 39 rulings and does not think the Strasbourg Court will intervene.

Rebel leader Robert Jenrick is proposing an amendment that would automatically throw out any Rule 39 orders.
