Over the past decade, gamers have been divided between digital and physical games. Digital games offer seamless switching between games and require only console storage. On the other hand, physical game enthusiasts believe that owning physical copies is crucial for gaming preservation, especially when online services are no longer available.

However, digital games are gaining the upper hand, with surveys revealing that up to 95% of gaming sales are now digital-only. Companies are taking notice of this shift, particularly with the rise of streaming services like Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus.

Similar to the trend in TV and film, more people are streaming content through services like Netflix instead of purchasing movies to keep. While Netflix used to dominate this market, new services like Disney+ and Paramount+ have emerged. Gaming is following suit.

Initially, Xbox Game Pass dominated the game streaming service market. However, individual companies like EA and Ubisoft have now developed their own subscription models. In an interview with GameIndustry.biz, Philippe Tremblay, director of subscriptions at Ubisoft, explained that gamers need to embrace the shift from owning physical copies to embracing digital games.

Tremblay stated, "One of the things we saw is that gamers are used to, a little bit like DVD, having and owning their games. That's the consumer shift that needs to happen. They got comfortable not owning their CD collection or DVD collection. As gamers grow comfortable in that aspect… you don't lose your progress."

He emphasized that players can resume their game at any time without losing their progress or what they've built in the game. Tremblay concluded, "So it's about feeling comfortable with not owning your game."

While this transition aligns with the rise of streaming in TV, film, and music, gamers still have reservations due to the longer completion time of games. To learn more about gaming subscriptions, check out the latest games available on Xbox Game Pass.
