Britain is set to send 20,000 troops to one of Nato's largest military exercises since the Cold War, as tensions rise in Eastern Europe. Defence Secretary Grant Shapps will make the announcement today, outlining the deployment of all three Armed Forces to the 31-nation drill. The exercises, codenamed Steadfast Defender, aim to prepare for potential aggression from Russia and come shortly after the US and UK's military strikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Preparing for Potential Aggression from Russia

The focus of the military exercises will be Eastern Europe, with 16,000 British troops, tanks, artillery, and helicopters being deployed from next month. The Royal Navy will send 2,000 sailors across eight warships and submarines, while 400 Royal Marines will be sent to the Arctic Circle. The RAF will utilize F-35B Lightning attack aircraft and Poseidon P-8 surveillance aircraft. The exercises come at a time when old enemies are reemerging and battle lines are being redrawn.

Responding to the End of the "Peace Dividend"

During a speech at London's Lancaster House, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps will also address the UK's response to the end of the "peace dividend" – a period marked by significant reduction in defence spending after the Cold War. He is expected to emphasize the need to be prepared to deter enemies, lead allies, and defend the nation. Shapps will highlight the rebuilding of barriers by adversaries and the shaking of the world order's foundations, placing the UK at a crossroads.

"Hard to Think of a Time with So Much Danger and Insecurity"

Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron, speaking to Sky News, expressed concern, stating that it is "hard to think of a time when there has been so much danger and insecurity." The deployment of 20,000 troops to the Nato exercises reflects the gravity of the situation and the UK's commitment to protecting its nation and supporting its allies.
