Tory Chief Ready to Back Amendments

Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has encountered a new challenge as one of his Tory party leaders, Deputy Party Chairman Lee Anderson, appears set to defy the government over the flagship Rwanda Bill. It is reported that Anderson is prepared to support the amendments proposed by the Tory right in a series of crucial votes this week.

Amendments Aim to Disapply International Law

Over 50 Members of Parliament have publicly added their names to the amendments, which seek to disapply international law and prevent migrants from blocking their deportation through individual appeals. Although the amendments are unlikely to be voted through without Labour support, the true test will come during the third reading when the rebels may reject the entire Bill.

Divisions within the Conservative Party

The leaders of three groups within the Tory right – Mark Francois, Sir John Hayes, and Danny Kruger – have already warned Prime Minister Boris Johnson that they may vote against the Bill unless their demands are met. However, more moderate members of the One Nation group are expected to oppose any changes that threaten international law and may reject the Bill if amendments to strengthen it are passed.

Former Justice Secretary Voices Concerns

Sir Robert Buckland, the former justice secretary, has expressed his reservations about the Bill, stating that if any of the amendments proposed by his colleagues are passed, he would be unable to support it during the third reading.
