Addressing Immigration Challenges
The Home Secretary, James Cleverly, has cautioned that failing to confront "community tensions" arising from immigration could bolster far-right support. He emphasized the need for politicians not to avoid the issues related to immigration, which can strain cohesion, housing, and public services.
Immigration Impact on Society
During a speech in New York, Cleverly highlighted the growing polarization and toxicity surrounding the immigration debate. He acknowledged the historical generosity of Britain but stressed the importance of acknowledging the tensions and challenges that immigration can bring.
Risks of Mishandling Immigration
Cleverly pointed out the risks of mishandling immigration issues by mentioning the British National Party's success in 2008 due to community tensions. He emphasized the need to assess the impact of immigration on various aspects like GDP, culture, cohesion, housing, and public services.
Local Impact of Immigration
While recognizing the widespread benefits of immigration, Cleverly noted that the downsides can create localized hotspots. He referenced the Notting Hill riots in 1958 as an example of racial violence erupting due to community tensions.
Migration Policies and Targets
Last year, net migration stood at around 675,000, surpassing the Tory's target of 250,000. The Home Office is set to implement measures to reduce this number, including raising the salary threshold for skilled workers and restricting care workers from bringing dependents.
