Cash Splash on External Consultants

Figures reveal that cash-strapped defence chiefs have spent more than £1 billion of taxpayer funds on external consultants since 2010. Additionally, over £1.5 billion was splurged by the Ministry of Defence on temporary staff in five years.

Increased Spending Criticized

Shadow Defence Secretary John Healey criticized the Tories for the "ever-increasing" amounts spent on consultants and temporary staff. Cash for consultants shot up fivefold from £26 million in 2010, while spending on temporary staff surged by 53% between 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, according to Labour analysis.

Labour's Response

Healey stated, "Since 2010, successive Conservative governments have wasted at least £15 billion of taxpayers’ money, failed to deliver major defence projects, and are cutting the British Army to its smallest size since Napoleon. Labour pledges to conduct an audit of MoD waste to ensure value for taxpayers’ money."

Tories' Future Plans

Despite pressure for more, the Tories have pledged to raise defence spending to 2.5%, aiming to address the ongoing concerns in the defence sector.
