Proposal to Deny Visas to Foreign Students Who Fail

Foreign students who fail their degrees in the UK may face the possibility of being denied visas, according to a new proposal. The idea was suggested by Home Office advisers, who believe that graduates should have a "certain grade" in order to continue their stay in the country.

Review of the Graduate Route

Home Secretary James Cleverly has assigned the Migration Advisory Committee to review the route used by nearly 100,000 students to find work after completing their studies. Professor Brian Bell, the chairman of the committee, explained that there is currently no formal requirement to graduate or achieve a specific grade in university. This is one of the aspects that will be reviewed in the graduate route.

Confusion over New Salary Rule

Last week, there was confusion regarding whether the new £38,700 salary rule for migrants would apply to those who are already in the UK. Legal migration minister Tom Pursglove clarified that the increased family visa threshold would not be applied retrospectively.

Expected Impact on Net Migration

Professor Bell stated that the new salary rule would have minimal impact on net migration. However, he also mentioned that the government's package of measures is likely to reduce annual arrivals by 300,000.
