Former Conservative Member of Parliament Nadine Dorries has announced that she will be returning more than £16,876 in severance pay that she mistakenly received. The money was given to her for her time as Culture Secretary under Boris Johnson.

Mistaken Payment

According to the rules, a departing minister is entitled to three months’ salary in lieu. However, this benefit is only available to those who are under 65 years old. Dorries turned 65 months before leaving her Cabinet role, making her ineligible for the severance pay.

Discovery and Response

Dorries stated that she only became aware of the error when she received an email about it on Friday. In response, she jokingly said, "That means now everybody knows I’m not 49." She further added, "I’ll pay it back on Monday morning, there are no details in the email on how to do that but I will, I’m sure, find out. I was gutted."

Political Background

Dorries served as the Member of Parliament for Mid Bedfordshire from 2005 to 2023. She resigned in protest at her exclusion from Boris Johnson's resignation honours list.
