Protest Group Republic Sets Sail to Disrupt King's Speech

An anti-monarchist group called Republic is causing controversy as they plan to disrupt the King's first state opening of Parliament with a boat demonstration. The group is seeking "Thames-worthy vessels" to make a visual statement during the event on November 7.

Outrage Over Tactics

The plan has sparked outrage among politicians, with former Justice Secretary Robert Buckland condemning the group's tactics, comparing them to the Spanish Armada and the Just Stop Oil movement. Buckland stated, "People, of course, have the right to protest, but taking a boat out on to the Thames is taking it a step too far."

Peaceful and Legal

Republic, in an email to their supporters, assured that their protest would be peaceful and legal. They are encouraging boat owners or those who know someone with a suitable vessel to get in touch and join their cause.

Backlash from MPs

MPs have voiced their disapproval of the group's actions, criticizing their efforts to undermine the democratic process. Tory MP Jonathan Gullis remarked, "It's sad this tiny minority is so determined to undermine the very democratic process they claim to support."

Buckingham Palace, the Metropolitan Police, and the House of Lords, which organizes the event, have all declined to comment on the planned demonstration.

Charles Takes the Stage

This will be the first time that Charles presides over the ceremony in his own right, although he has previously stood in for the Queen. The King's Speech will outline the government's policies, priorities, and planned laws for the upcoming year, potentially making it Charles' final speech before the next General Election.
