Hamas' Lack of Commitment to Ceasefire
In his statement, Cleverly emphasized that calls for a ceasefire alone will not contribute to resolving the situation in Gaza. He highlighted the UK's efforts to facilitate the passage of humanitarian aid, secure the release of hostages, and evacuate British citizens from the area. However, Cleverly expressed doubt in Hamas' intentions, stating that he has seen no evidence that the group desires or would adhere to a ceasefire.
Pressing for Humanitarian Aid
The UK government has been urging Israel to allow the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Cleverly acknowledged that while it is crucial to preserve civilian life and adhere to international law, Hamas has been storing weapons and operating within civilian infrastructure, effectively using the population as human shields. He stressed that Israel has the right to self-defense and has been bombarded by Hamas and other terrorist organizations since the recent escalation in violence.
Warning Against Manipulation and Disinformation
In a message to those participating in pro-Palestine protests in the UK, Cleverly urged individuals to be cautious of manipulation and disinformation. He stated that it is possible to support the Palestinian people while condemning Hamas. Cleverly expressed concern that some individuals within these protests may have ulterior motives and emphasized the importance of being aware and vigilant.
