Airport authorities at both Heathrow and Gatwick have revealed that they have uncovered the same crumbling concrete that has caused school closures across Britain. These revelations come as it was disclosed that they were already aware of the issue prior to the recent schools crisis.

Concrete issues found at Heathrow

Last year, the presence of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) was first discovered at Terminal 3 of Heathrow Airport. While permanent solutions are being considered, Heathrow has implemented temporary safety measures to address the issue.

Gatwick takes action

Gatwick Airport has also recently conducted inspections of RAAC in its buildings. Fortunately, no concerns were found during the assessment, putting the minds of airport officials and passengers at ease.

Manchester Airport under scrutiny

Meanwhile, Manchester Airport is currently undergoing inspections to determine the presence of crumbling concrete. However, authorities believe the likelihood of RAAC being found is very low.

Residential buildings at risk?

Not only airports but also town hall chiefs have been instructed to assess their social housing stock for the presence of killer concrete. The Regulator of Social Housing has warned that RAAC may be present in council homes constructed between the 1950s and 1980s, specifically those with flat roofs and panel structures.

With the discovery of crumbling concrete at airports and the increasing concern for public safety, it is crucial that appropriate measures are taken to address this issue in order to prevent any future incidents.
