In 2015, as the war in Syria raged and refugees sought shelter, Chancellor Angela Merkel declared, "We can do this." Locals across Germany welcomed the newcomers with open arms. However, in recent years, Germany has experienced the consequences of its open borders policy, leading to a controversial manifesto that has sparked intense debate.

Germany's Open Borders Policy

Under Merkel's leadership, Germany accepted 1.1 million asylum seekers in 2015 alone, including many from war-torn Syria. The spirit of welcoming refugees was embraced by the German tabloid Bild, which launched a campaign called "We help – #refugeeswelcome." However, as Berlin's economy falters and anti-immigration sentiment rises, Bild has changed its tune.

"Germany, we have a problem!"

Bild am Sonntag, Germany's best-selling newspaper, published a highly controversial 50-point manifesto titled "Germany, we have a problem!" The manifesto outlines "house rules" and highlights the importance of never allowing anti-Semitism, tyranny, and racism to resurface in Germany. It calls for a clear understanding of expectations for those who want to live in the country.

Rising Anti-Semitism and Public Backlash

Germany has experienced a surge in anti-Semitic incidents, particularly since the Hamas terror attack in Israel in October. Pro-Palestinian riots, attacks on synagogues, and the daubing of the Star of David on homes have raised concerns. While some have praised Bild's manifesto, others argue that it makes racist insinuations about Arab immigrants.

A Changing Public Opinion

Public opinion in Germany is shifting, with an Ipsos poll revealing that 48% of Germans now believe the country should stop accepting refugees. This sentiment is reflected in the rise of the anti-immigration far-right party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is polling at a record 21%. Even the German Green Party, part of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition, has called for a crackdown on illegal asylum seekers.

Political Response and Controversial Measures

German politicians, including Chancellor Scholz, have taken steps to address public concerns. Border checks have been reinstated, resulting in a significant decrease in unauthorized entries. Scholz has also promised to examine deals similar to the UK's controversial Rwanda policy and cut benefits for asylum seekers to alleviate the strain on local authorities.

Awake to the Problem

Retired German constitutional court judge Hans-Jürgen Papier believes that both the EU and successive German governments ignored the migration problem for too long. He argues that it is only now, under the pressure of rising numbers and the influence of extremist parties, that people are finally waking up to the issue.

While Bild's manifesto has sparked both support and criticism, it reflects the changing political landscape in Germany and the growing concerns over migration and integration.
