Labour’s Plan to Make Vaping Prescription-Only to Protect Children

Labour, if elected, plans to make vaping prescription-only in an effort to prevent children from becoming addicted to nicotine, according to shadow health secretary Wes Streeting. Recent figures show that the number of young e-cigarette users has tripled in the past five years, with one in five aged 11 to 17 having tried them. The government is currently closing a consultation on measures to crack down on the industry, amid concerns that companies are targeting those under 18. Disposable vapes, which are easy to buy and come in various flavors, could also face a ban.

Irresponsible Industry Addicting a Generation, Says Streeting

Streeting expressed outrage at the e-cigarette industry, calling it "irresponsible" for addicting young people to nicotine while positioning itself as a smoking cessation service. Disposable vapes, which do not require setup or recharging, have gained popularity due to their ease of purchase and their reputation as a "healthier" alternative to traditional cigarettes. Supermarkets and corner shops across the UK sell vapes in flavors like bubblegum, strawberry lemonade, and blueberry.

International Bans on Vaping

While Labour's proposal would be a major change in the UK, other countries have already taken action against vaping. Australia has banned all forms of vaping, Germany has outlawed flavored e-cigarettes, and New Zealand has stopped the sale of disposable vapes. Vaping is also illegal in India, Uganda, Singapore, and several other countries.
