Controversial letter from Labour candidate

A Labour by-election candidate, Genevieve Kitchen, is facing scrutiny for signing a letter in 2019 that advocated for a ban on nuclear weapons and open borders. The letter also called for a second Brexit referendum and a massive expansion of public ownership, including of banks and finance.

Accusations from the Tories

Richard Holden, the Tory chair, criticized Kitchen's past positions, stating that it shows that the Labour Party has not truly changed under Keir Starmer's leadership. Holden accused Labour of being the party of protest without a clear plan for implementing their left-wing ideas.

Labour's response

A spokesperson for the Labour Party defended Kitchen, highlighting that the letter was written five years ago. They emphasized that Kitchen respects the outcome of the Brexit referendum and is now focused on addressing the issues that matter to the people of Wellingborough, such as regenerating town centers, reducing knife crime, and improving access to healthcare services.
