Data shows majority of councils prioritizing non-UK nationals for social housing are Labour-led

Fresh data has revealed that 14 out of the top 20 councils that allocate a higher proportion of their social homes to non-UK nationals are under Labour administration. Five councils are Conservative-led and one is governed by the Liberal Democrats.

Brent Borough: 40% of new tenancies in 2021/22 went to non-UK nationals

In the London borough of Brent, which has a backlog of 28,000 households waiting for social housing, 40% of new tenancies in the year 2021/22 were given to non-UK nationals.

Lambeth Borough: 21% of tenancies in 2021/22 went to foreigners

In Lambeth, where 36,000 households are currently waiting for social housing, 21% of tenancies in the same year were allocated to foreigners.

Housing Secretary Michael Gove has pledged to introduce a new rule that would prioritize families with strong ties to Britain and their local area in the social housing queue. Under the proposed reform, applicants would need to prove their connection to the UK for at least ten years and to the local area for at least two years.

Tory plans aim to ensure social housing goes to those most in need

The Conservative plans also include measures to exclude high-income tenants from qualifying for social housing, with the aim of ensuring homes go to those who are most in need. Additionally, tenants who repeatedly cause disturbances and inconvenience to their neighbors may face eviction under a "three strikes and you're out" policy, and potentially be banned from social renting for up to five years.
