Keir Starmer Declines to Reveal Suspension Reason

Sir Keir Starmer faced criticism today for his failure to provide an explanation as to why senior MP Nick Brown was suspended from the Labour party one year ago. Brown, a former chief whip, had his whip removed in September 2022 and has been under investigation since. However, party officials have yet to disclose the details of the suspension or when the inquiry will conclude.

MP Still Receiving Tax-Payer Funded Salary

Despite his suspension, Nick Brown continues to receive a tax-payer funded salary of £86,584. Brown, the MP for Newcastle upon Tyne East, served as chief whip for every Labour leader from Tony Blair onwards and, at 72 years old, is one of the party's longest-serving politicians.

No Knowledge of Complaint

When initially suspended, Brown stated that he was fully cooperating with the investigation, but was unaware of the specific complaint against him. He said, "There has been a complaint made about me to the Labour party, which is under investigation. I am therefore under an administrative suspension from the Labour party until the investigation is concluded. I'm not aware of what the complaint is. I am cooperating fully with the investigation."

Suspension of Diane Abbott Also Under Review

In addition to Nick Brown, the suspension of veteran MP Diane Abbott remains unresolved. Abbott was suspended from Labour in April after making controversial comments about Jewish people and racism. Labour has been contacted for comment regarding both cases.
