Sir Tony Lloyd also had a degree in mathematics from the University of Nottingham and worked as a lecturer before entering politics. He revealed in January 2023 that he was undergoing chemotherapy for a recent cancer diagnosis, and unfortunately, his condition worsened, leading to his passing on January 17, 2024.

Sir Tony Lloyd's political career

Sir Tony Lloyd entered Parliament in 1983, succeeding Winston Churchill. He later switched to the Manchester Central seat in 1997. He served as a Foreign Office minister for two years in Tony Blair's New Labour government. He was also the inaugural Police and Crime Commissioner for Greater Manchester in 2012 and became the region's interim mayor in 2015. In 2017, he stood as Labour's candidate for the Greater Manchester mayor election. He returned to the House of Commons as MP for Rochdale and became shadow Northern Ireland secretary under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership.
