Labour's newly appointed shadow culture, media, and sports secretary, Thangam Debbonaire, caused a stir when she revealed that she has never been to a live football or rugby match. Debbonaire, who represents Bristol West, made the admission during a recent interview.

Advocacy Concerns

The revelation has raised concerns about how Debbonaire would effectively advocate for sports fans, particularly in her own constituency where there is a strong following for Bristol City and Bristol Rovers football clubs, as well as the city's Premiership rugby team.

"I Know How Much it Matters to Other People"

When asked whether she preferred football or rugby, Debbonaire replied, "Do you know, I've never been to a football or a rugby match, but I know how much it matters to other people. My husband played rugby, so I'm going to have to go with rugby."

Labour's Previous Criticism

The admission has drawn attention to Labour's previous criticism of government appointments. Just days ago, the party condemned the appointment of Grant Shapps as the UK's new defence secretary, arguing that he lacked background knowledge in the field. The vice-chair of the Commons Defence Committee, John Spellar, expressed disappointment that contenders with extensive knowledge were overlooked.

Debbonaire's Place in the New Shadow Cabinet

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer recently unveiled his new-look shadow cabinet ahead of next year's general election. The appointments included Liz Kendall and Pat McFadden, who were rewarded with significant promotions, while Lucy Powell and Lisa Nandy faced demotions. Debbonaire's appointment as shadow culture and sports secretary is part of Starmer's strategy for the upcoming election.

Despite her lack of personal experience attending football or rugby matches, Debbonaire will face the challenge of effectively representing sports fans and their interests.
