New Laws Crack Down on Nitrous Oxide

The UK government has announced that laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, will be made illegal in the coming weeks. Serious users of the drug could face up to two years in prison, while those who deal it will now face doubled jail terms of up to 14 years. The move is part of a broader crackdown on anti-social behavior, which will be enforced starting from November 8.

Class C Substance and Punishments

Under the new laws, nitrous oxide will be classified as a Class C substance. Possession for the purpose of getting high will be considered an offense. Penalties for possession range from an unlimited fine and community service to a caution and a two-year prison sentence for repeat offenders.

Concerns Over Anti-Social Behavior and Health Risks

Home Secretary Suella Braverman ordered the crackdown on laughing gas due to its association with anti-social behavior, particularly in children's parks where users often leave the empty canisters behind. The drug has also been linked to health risks such as anaemia, nerve damage, and paralysis.

"Zero-Tolerance" Approach to Drug Misuse

Policing Minister Chris Philp emphasized the government's commitment to a "zero-tolerance" approach towards drug misuse and anti-social behavior in public spaces. He stated that the abuse of nitrous oxide is dangerous to people's health and that both users and dealers will face the full force of the law for their actions.

Legitimate Uses and Regulations

Despite the ban, nitrous oxide will still have legitimate uses in settings such as kitchens and maternity wards for pain relief during labor. However, individuals will need to prove that they do not intend to use the substance for psychoactive effects. No license will be required for carrying nitrous oxide.

Positive Impact on Communities

Neighborhood Watch CEO John Hayward-Cripps expressed support for the legislation, stating that the banning of nitrous oxide will help tackle anti-social behavior and make local communities safer and more pleasant places to live.
