Matt Hancock, the former Health Secretary, wanted to have the power to decide "who should live and who should die" if hospitals became overwhelmed during the Covid pandemic, according to a claim made by an NHS chief. Lord Simon Stevens, the former NHS England chief executive, stated that Hancock believed he should be the one to make such decisions, rather than the medical profession or the public. Fortunately, this dilemma never became a reality, Stevens added. He also alleged that senior ministers often avoided attending Cobra meetings chaired by Hancock, delegating the responsibility to their junior ministers instead.

Criticism and Accusations

Matt Hancock has faced criticism for his handling of the pandemic, with former Whitehall boss Helen MacNamara recently calling him a "serial liar." However, the top civil servant at the Health Department, Sir Christopher Wormald, defended Hancock against these claims. He acknowledged that many people felt Hancock had been overly optimistic in his predictions and promises, but he believed that only a small number of individuals accused Hancock of actually telling untruths.
