MPs and Peers Show a Preference for Croissants

In a surprising turn of events, Members of Parliament (MPs) and peers are choosing French croissants over traditional British crumpets. Last year, they consumed a staggering 28 times more croissants than crumpets at Westminster.

Call to Support Traditional British Snacks

This shift in preference has sparked a call for MPs, Lords, and staff to support and embrace our traditional British snacks. The decline in crumpet consumption around the House of Lords and Commons has raised concerns about the cultural significance of these iconic treats.

Crumpet vs Croissant: The Numbers

In 2022, only 753 crumpets were purchased at cafes and snack bars in Parliament, whereas a massive 21,049 croissants were enjoyed. Out of the croissants consumed, 13,406 were plain butter, 7,191 were almond-flavored, and 452 were chocolate-filled.

MP Nigel Mills Calls for Action

Tory MP for Amber Valley, Nigel Mills, expressed his concern about the decline in crumpet consumption. He stated, "These figures show that we need to take back control of our own breakfast products. I do like a crumpet, so I will try to eat more of them."

The Versatility of Crumpets

Karen Dear, of the Craft Bakers Association, praised the versatility of the British classic. She emphasized that crumpets can be topped with a variety of ingredients, such as butter and jam, cheese, or even chocolate spread. Their adaptability makes them a delicious snack for any time of day.

Kit Kats Take the Lead in Chocolate Bars

Aside from crumpets and croissants, Kit Kats emerged as the most popular chocolate bar among MPs and peers, with over 8,000 sold. Twix and Snickers closely followed in popularity.

Carrot Cake vs Victoria Sponge

In terms of sweet treats, 7,178 slices of carrot cake were sold, surpassing the runner-up, Victoria Sponge, which reached 3,333 slices. These numbers were uncovered through a Freedom of Information request.
