TikTok Selling Small Boat Places on Platform

MPs in the UK are calling on social media giant TikTok to take immediate action against posts that glorify and promote deadly Channel crossings by migrants. Smuggling gangs have been using the platform to sell small boat places, just days after six migrants tragically drowned in a crossing attempt. One post even boasted about the success of traffickers in getting people to Britain and offered a "cheap price" for a place on a boat. Senior Tory MPs, including former party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith and Home Affairs Committee member Marco Longhi, have criticized TikTok for not doing enough to combat this illegal activity.

"Either Remove these Posts or Don't Operate Here"

Sir Iain Duncan Smith has called on the UK government to give TikTok an ultimatum: remove these posts or face consequences. He believes that the promotion of illegal activities on the platform should not be tolerated. Mr. Longhi expressed his disappointment in TikTok's efforts, saying that technology is advanced enough to stop these posts if there is a will to do so. He warned that the government may have to intervene further if TikTok fails to address the issue.

TikTok's Government Partnership Not Enough

In an attempt to combat the illegal trade and exploitation of migrants, TikTok recently partnered with the government. However, it appears that their efforts have fallen short. The platform has been unable to effectively remove every post promoting Channel crossings, despite the partnership.

Further Tragedy and Boat Rescues

Amidst ongoing discussions about TikTok's role in facilitating illegal crossings, a migrant woman was rescued after surviving a small boat Channel crossing. The RNLI, a UK lifeboat charity, picked up approximately 50 people off the coast of Kent. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers involved in these crossings and the urgent need to address the issue.
