Proposed Legislation Aims to Hold Fujitsu Accountable for Post Office Fiasco

Fujitsu may be required to compensate every postmaster who suffered financial losses in the Horizon scandal, according to a new law being proposed by the government. The scandal saw hundreds of postmasters wrongfully convicted. However, Lord John Mann has identified an additional 4,000 "hidden victims" who repaid money they never owed. He is calling for an amendment to the law that would mandate Fujitsu to repay all the funds. This could result in a significant financial burden for the IT giant, with estimates reaching millions of pounds.

Thousands of Additional Sub Postmasters and Mistresses Affected

Lord John Mann has highlighted the plight of the "hidden victims" in the Horizon scandal – over 4,000 sub postmasters and mistresses who quietly repaid money they never owed out of fear of prosecution and damage to their reputation. He is determined that these individuals should not be ignored and that Fujitsu should be held accountable for their mistreatment. The proposed amendment to the law would ensure that every penny is repaid to these victims in full, acknowledging the years of suffering they have endured.

Justice Secretary Calls for Fujitsu to Contribute to Compensation Scheme

Justice Secretary Alex Chalk has expressed the view that Fujitsu should contribute to the post office compensation scheme, stating that "polluters should pay." However, the government is waiting for the public inquiry into the Horizon scandal to conclude before determining the specifics of Fujitsu's contribution. The inquiry is expected to wrap up by the end of the year. In addition to compensation, there are also calls for Fujitsu to have its government contracts revoked.

Fujitsu has not responded to requests for comment.
