Rising Star MP Raises Concerns at Tory Conference

A rising star Tory MP has claimed that children are being influenced to identify as transgender through online pornography. Speaking at a Tory Conference fringe event on safeguarding, Miriam Cates warned party members that explicit material on the internet was leading young people into the "trans arena". Cates, who represents Penistone and Stocksbridge, expressed concern over the impact of extreme pornography on children, stating that the average age for a child to first encounter such content is 13.

Trans Porn and Trans Identity

Cates highlighted that anecdotal evidence suggests that exposure to trans porn can influence individuals to identify as transgender. She stated, "You see an awful lot of trans women, so men, saying it was trans porn that led them into the trans arena. So I have no doubt that this kind of extreme, violent and very disturbing pornographic material on the internet has got a lot to do with it."

Tory MP Calls for Statutory Guidance

Cates also called on the Department for Education to make its forthcoming guidance on trans issues legally binding. The guidance, which was due to be released in July but was postponed, aims to provide teachers with advice on how to support children who express a desire to change their gender. According to draft guidance revealed by HOAR, parental permission would be required for children to transition at school, while participation in competitive sport would be restricted.

Fears of Delayed Trans Legislation

There are growing concerns among MPs that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will stall on implementing new trans laws to avoid inflaming divisions within the Tory party. The delay in publishing the trans guidance sparked criticism, with some accusing the Department for Education of neglecting the issue. Cates argued that making the guidance statutory would help to bring the debate into the public sphere, despite the likelihood that some schools and activists might ignore it.
