Peers Vote to Delay Treaty with Kigali

Peers have dealt a blow to Rishi Sunak's deportation scheme by supporting a bid to delay the new treaty with Rwanda. Although non-binding, this vote signals the intent of the House of Lords to thwart the Prime Minister's flagship plan.

Fears Over Lack of Safeguards

In a vote of 214 to 171, peers expressed concerns about the new deal with Rwanda, suggesting it lacks certain safeguards. Labour's Lord Goldsmith argued that asylum seekers are not safe under the current agreement and called for Parliament to scrutinize the treaty before making a judgment.

Accusations of Frustrating Elected MPs

Tory Home Office Minister Lord Sharp accused Labour of trying to frustrate the will of elected MPs, who had previously approved the Rwanda Bill. However, next week, when the legislation reaches the Lords, it is expected to face rejection.

PM Warns Against Obstruction

Last week, Rishi Sunak cautioned the unelected politicians not to hinder the plan, as it plays a vital role in curbing the influx of small boats.
