Controversy Over Minister's Use of Public Money

Rishi Sunak has backed Science Secretary Michelle Donelan amidst calls for her resignation, as it was revealed that £15,000 of public funds were used to settle a libel case on her behalf.

Donelan had wrongly accused Professor Kate Sang of supporting the terror group Hamas, leading to the legal dispute.

Sunak's Defense and Government's Stance

Defending the decision to retain Donelan, the Prime Minister explained that the government has a long-standing practice of funding legal disputes involving ministers in the course of their official duties, regardless of party affiliation.

Addressing the situation, Sunak stated, "Michelle raised some concerns about articles she had seen, but those concerns have since been clarified and withdrawn. The settlement reflects government protocol in such matters."

Former Education Secretary Penny Mordaunt's rejection of a £17,000 payment after just 36 hours in the role was highlighted as an example of valuing taxpayer money.

Opposition and Criticism

Labour criticized the use of public funds in this case, labeling it as "a new low" in government conduct.
