Tory MPs Anderson and Clarke-Smith quit deputy party chairs

Rishi Sunak, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, has been dealt a major blow as two Conservative MPs resigned from their positions as deputy party chairs. Lee Anderson and Brendan Clarke-Smith stepped down after rebelling against the government's Rwanda plan, voting in favor of rebel amendments to strengthen the Prime Minister's flagship deportation scheme.

Over 60 Conservative MPs join rightwing revolt

The resignations come as over 60 Conservative MPs have joined a rightwing revolt, demanding significant changes to the Rwanda Bill. The rebels have warned Rishi Sunak that the plan is "legally and operationally unworkable" and have threatened to vote it down if the necessary amendments are not made.

Boris Johnson intervenes, calling for a more robust bill

Adding to the pressure on Sunak, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has publicly urged ministers to make the Rwanda Bill more "robust". While the Chancellor has not fully backed the rebel amendments, he has offered to defy European judges and expedite legal challenges from migrants. However, this has failed to appease some rebels, who have threatened to sink the entire Bill if it remains unchanged.
