Chancellor Rishi Sunak has emphasized that it is unfair for illegal migrants arriving in the UK on small boats to "jump the queue." He also reiterated the importance of integration and signing up to British values for those allowed to move to the country.

Commitment to Integration and British Values

During an interview on ITV's This Morning, Rishi Sunak underscored the welcoming nature of Britain and its ability to provide opportunities for immigrants to succeed. However, he emphasized the need for integration and signing up to British values, in order to foster a shared understanding among individuals.

He stated, "We’re all living proof of the fact that immigrants can come here, do well and that’s something I think we do better than any country in the world. I think we also agree when people do come here they should integrate. They should sign up to British values so we have that shared understanding amongst us."

Risks to Britain's Compassionate Reputation

Rishi Sunak also warned that the influx of illegal migrants could put Britain's reputation for compassion at risk if the system is unable to cope. Currently, taxpayers pay £8 million per day for housing asylum seekers, many of whom are brought to the UK by criminal gangs.

Battle to Stop Small Boats Crossing the Channel

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has prioritized efforts to prevent small boats from crossing the English Channel. However, the deportation plan to Rwanda is facing obstacles in the courts, causing delays. Ministers argue that if the plan is ultimately blocked, it will strengthen the case for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights.
