UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has emphasized that he will not rush into a trade deal with India, as he arrives in New Delhi for the G20 summit. Sunak stated that he is not setting a deadline for the negotiations to conclude, despite acknowledging progress. If successful, this trade deal would make Britain the first European country to sign a free trade agreement with India, providing a significant boost to the UK economy and a political triumph for Sunak.

Concerns over Visas and Tax Cuts

However, there are concerns that India might request thousands of new work visas and tax cuts for Indian workers in Britain in exchange for the deal. This potential demand could complicate the negotiations and impact the final terms of the agreement.

A Warm Welcome for Sunak

As the first Prime Minister of Indian heritage to visit the country, Sunak received a warm welcome in New Delhi. Upon landing, he and his wife, Akshata Murty, were greeted by traditional dancers. Expressing his excitement about returning to India since assuming office, Sunak referred to the country as "very near and dear" to him. He also humorously mentioned being referred to as India's son-in-law, hoping it was meant affectionately.

Sunak expressed gratitude for having his wife, Akshata, by his side during this visit.
