Rishi Sunak, the UK's Chancellor of the Exchequer, paid a heartfelt tribute to Nigel Lawson, the late former Chancellor, during a memorial service held in his honor. The Prime Minister, along with numerous past and present politicians, attended the ceremony at St Margaret's Church in London. TV chef Nigella Lawson, Nigel Lawson's daughter, was also present to remember her father.

A Tribute to a Radical

In his tribute, Rishi Sunak praised Nigel Lawson as a "serious radical" who understood the importance of thorough preparation for major missions. He highlighted how Lawson's tax-cutting reforms, implemented during Margaret Thatcher's tenure as Prime Minister, have stood the test of time. Sunak emphasized that no one is seriously considering reintroducing exchange controls or high tax rates from the post-war era.

A Gathering of Political Figures

The memorial service was attended by several prominent political figures, including former Prime Ministers Sir John Major and Sir Iain Duncan Smith, as well as former Chancellors George Osborne, Sajid Javid, and Lord Norman Lamont. Current Cabinet Ministers, such as Jeremy Hunt, Michael Gove, and Kemi Badenoch, were also present to pay their respects.

Lord Lawson's Legacy

Lord Lawson, who served as Chancellor from 1983 to 1989, was known for his significant tax reductions, particularly during the radical 1988 "giveaway" Budget. His reforms were highly regarded and have had a lasting impact. However, his tenure was not without controversy, as he famously resigned following disagreements with then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Born in Hampstead, North London, in 1932, Lawson started his career as a journalist at the Financial Times before entering politics. He served as a Member of Parliament for the Blaby constituency from 1974 to 1992 and was a vocal supporter of Brexit.
