Review of Post Office Prosecution Powers Announced in Wake of Horizon IT Scandal
Chancellor Rishi Sunak has confirmed that wronged postmasters may receive a blanket exoneration in light of the Horizon IT scandal. The Prime Minister has announced a review of Post Office prosecution powers after hundreds of postmasters were "wrongfully treated". Speaking on the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme, Sunak stated that ministers are exploring the option of exonerating all postmasters involved in the scandal.
Justice for the Wronged
Expressing his outrage at the "appalling miscarriage of justice", Sunak emphasized the importance of ensuring that those affected receive the justice they deserve. In 2021, 39 postmasters had their convictions overturned after winning their case at the Court of Appeal. The Justice Secretary is currently examining the possibility of removing the Post Office's ability to investigate and prosecute.
Compensation and Support
The government has already paid out approximately £150 million to thousands of affected individuals through compensation schemes. Interim payments of up to £600,000 are available to expedite the process of providing financial relief. There are three different schemes in place, and those affected are encouraged to come forward and seek assistance.
The Horizon IT Scandal
The Horizon IT scandal involved faulty accounting software called Horizon, developed by Fujitsu, which falsely indicated that money was missing from Post Office branches. More than 700 postmasters were criminally convicted based on flawed information provided by Horizon. It was later discovered that the software had numerous bugs, errors, and defects. Victims suffered severe consequences, including bankruptcy, personal financial burdens, the sale of their homes, and even imprisonment.
Police Investigation Underway
Metropolitan Police detectives are currently investigating potential fraud offences related to the handling of the scandal. The focus of the investigation is on money recovered through prosecutions and civil action. It remains unclear whether the probe is targeting individual staff members or the Post Office as a corporate entity.
Overall, the government is determined to right the wrongs of the Horizon IT scandal and ensure that justice is served for the wronged postmasters.
